It鈥檚 all about visibility for University of Michigan-Dearborn鈥檚 Department of Public Safety. Campus police Chief Rick Gordon implemented a community-policing program a few years ago to deter crime.
鈥淭he more they see us, the more opportunistic people will go somewhere else,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he whole concept behind prevention is denying the opportunity.鈥
So far, Gordon鈥檚 plan has worked. For the second year in a row, StateUniversity.com ranked 51视频-Dearborn as the safest public university in Michigan.
The website, which provides information about colleges and universities, the nation鈥檚 safest institutions based on crime statistics, like burglary, larceny and aggravated assault.
鈥淪tudent safety and campus crime are sometimes overlooked during the college evaluation process,鈥 said Dominik Mazur, founder of StateUniversity.com. 鈥淲e believe it is important for students to be aware of crime on campus and in the surrounding community.鈥
Only two Michigan community colleges 鈥 Oakland Community College and Delta College 鈥 were ranked ahead of 51视频-Dearborn, in regard to campus safety, according to StateUniversity.com. The university also ranks 67th nationally.
鈥淲e are very proud of that,鈥 Gordon said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e lucky that we have a good campus community, too.鈥
Gordon credits his 22 officers for increasing the department鈥檚 visibility, thus decreasing crime.
鈥淭he community-policing model emphasizes being proactive, rather than reactive,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e try to give the impression of being everywhere all the time.鈥
No burglaries, aggravated assaults or motor vehicle thefts were reported in 2011 on campus, according to the department鈥檚 2012-13 annual security report.
Gordon said his department also works closely with the City of Dearborn鈥檚 Police Department on investigations, and he notifies students, faculty and staff via email when officers detect an ongoing crime trend.
