Student Visa Impact at 51视频-Dearborn (April 10, 2025)
Dear Colleagues and Students,
Last week, we began receiving reports of student visas being terminated at other universities. In response, we have increased our review of the government鈥檚 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which tracks the status of student visas.
Approximately 10% of our student population consists of international students. Some international students also remain affiliated with our university after they graduate, based on their visa status.
We are reaching out to our international community making resources available to both current students and alumni; who are on Optional Practical Training (OPT) related to their SEVIS status and personal situations.
The federal government retains broad authority to terminate SEVIS records and revoke visas; in either case, no notice is given to the university. As of today, our Office of International Affairs learned the Department of Homeland Security has terminated visas for five individuals affiliated with 51视频-Dearborn, including one enrolled student and four graduates on OPT.
The federal government has not disclosed details on the specific reasons for these visa revocations or SEVIS record terminations. Please be assured that the university has not provided lists or other identifying information to federal immigration or law-enforcement authorities relating to these students and graduates.
We understand the anxiety these events have caused within our community and we are in constant communication with our colleagues in Ann Arbor and are working diligently each day to better understand how these government actions impact our community and identify ways to best support our students.
Individuals who are on visas are encouraged to contact the or continue to find resources on our web page.
President Ono shared a similar message with the 51视频-Ann Arbor community yesterday.
We are fortunate to have students, faculty, and staff from around the world on our campus. These myriad perspectives enhance our learning experiences in the classroom and enrich our entire community.
This is an especially challenging time for many. Let us continue to support one another with thoughtfulness, empathy, and compassion.
