Jogging and Walking

51视频-Dearborn has wonderful trails for jogging and walking. However, it鈥檚 important as a pedestrian to be vigilant and pay attention to your surroundings鈥攅specially at night or whenever you鈥檙e jogging or walking alone. The following guidelines can help you stay safe:

  • Jog or walk with a friend. If you can, bring someone you trust with you.
  • Stick to familiar territory. Knowing where you are and where you鈥檙e going will save you from getting lost.
  • Avoid secluded areas, especially at night. If you鈥檙e out and about after dark, stick to well-lit and populated areas.
  • Always carry your phone. You never know when you may need to call for help in the event of an emergency.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing. Again, this is especially important at night. As a pedestrian, you need to be seen by drivers.
  • Face oncoming traffic. You need to see what鈥檚 coming toward you.
  • Don鈥檛 wear headphones. If you鈥檙e zoned out listening to music, you鈥檙e not paying attention to your surroundings. You鈥檙e more likely to bump into people, trip, walk into traffic or become a target for theft or attack.
  • Carry a whistle. Use it to alert people in the vicinity if you ever feel that you鈥檙e in danger. The loud sound and extra attention can help ward off attackers or stalkers.
  • Report suspicious activity. If you鈥檙e ever approached by someone who makes you feel unsafe or otherwise find yourself in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, call the Department of Public Safety dispatch at 313-593-5333. If it's an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
