CASL Faculty Absence Policy

I. Policy

This policy covers faculty absences when faculty are unable to conduct class, whether on line or face to face. If a faculty member covers their scheduled face-to-face classes online and/or remotely(on a limited basis), it is not considered an absence. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all scheduled class time is accounted for.

II. Forms of Absence

  • Forms of Absence
    • Illness
    • Conferences, professional meetings, or other professional duties
    • Family/personal emergencies
  • Absence Policy
    • All teaching faculty must make a reasonable effort to meet all scheduled classes for the allotted time, including moving classes online
    • If it is impossible for any of the above reasons to meet a class, it is the instructor鈥檚 duty to inform the departmental office if and when the absence can be anticipated
    • The course instructor is responsible for arranging appropriate substitute instruction in the event of an absence
    • The instructor should inform the class, as well as their respective departmental office, of alternate teaching arrangements in advance of absence (if possible) and win class approval of any rescheduled class meetings
  • Departmental Responsibility
    • The department chair bears the ultimate responsibility of seeing that classes meet as scheduled with an acceptable instructor, or that the instructor gives alternate assignments
