Catalog Information and Use Guidelines for Canvas
Going forward, course sites in “Academic Canvas” will be restricted to those coming from Banner or work-in-progress (WIP) sites for Banner course development.
Professional Development Canvas will be for any non-Banner courses or programs which still require a learning management system and may need to have users outside of the U-M system. There is a back-end link between Academic Canvas and Professional Development Canvas so 51Ƶ-Dearborn users will not have to worry about logging into two different systems to find their courses. The Professional Development Canvas instance also has a public front-end, officially called Canvas Catalog, which acts as an optional storefront for courses in Professional Development Canvas. Through the Catalog front end, we can offer courses or programs (a series of courses) to the public either for free or (coming soon) for a fee to be paid via credit card. If the Canvas course is set up in a specific way, Canvas Catalog can provide the participant with a certificate of completion (not an official academic certificate), though this is solely done based on completion of modules and does not take the final course grade into account at all.
Non-Banner Courses or programs which have received exceptions in the past to be in Academic Canvas will be transitioned to Professional Development Canvas, with most things transitioned over by the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.
While the Professional Development Canvas instance will allow us to have more flexibility in allowing access to Canvas courses, there will still be some guidelines and an approval process to get a course.
Guidelines:
Professional Development Canvas courses must:
- Have a goal to educate an audience about a particular topic or topics.
- Include most elements of an academic course: information delivery, interaction among participants, and assessment of learning (through discussions, assignments, quizzes, etc)
- Have significant online components, though the course could have some in-person meetings or activities.
Professional Development Canvas courses must not:
- Be used solely for communication. Email is the primary method for communication at 51Ƶ-Dearborn, and there are policies around communications with students in general that all faculty and staff must follow.
- Be used solely to deliver information. In general, information should be delivered through the official university website, or in cases where the information may not be for public consumption a Google Site would be the best option.
- Be used solely to collect payments. While the system will be able to take credit card payments at some point in the future, the payments are intended to be for the content and information being delivered through the connected course. Creating a Professional Development Canvas course and associated Canvas Catalog as a gateway to collect payments for something else is not permitted.
- Be credit-bearing. All credit-bearing courses will be listed in Banner, have tuition paid through official processes, and have course shells and enrollments automatically created in Academic Canvas.
Fees:
- If a course or program will be made available to the public and have a fee associated with it, the unit/group which is offering the course or program shall determine the fee at their own discretion.
- Payments made through the platform are non-refundable. Registrations and payment is final upon completion of the payment process.
- Money associated with course fees (minus any applicable processing fees) will be deposited in an Office of the Provost account and then transferred to appropriate unit funds within 90 days of course completion.
Certificates/Certification:
The Canvas Catalog front-end offers the option to generate “certificates of completion” for course enrollees, if the course is designed in a specific way that this process needs to function. Please note: a Canvas Catalog certificate of completion is not the same as an academic certificate. Courses offering 51Ƶ-Dearborn academic certificates should be offered through the official course offerings in Banner, and they would therefore be in Academic Canvas. The decision to provide certificates of completion must be made before any students are enrolled in the course, as the functionality will not work correctly if the option is enabled at a later time.
Department, college, or other personnel in leadership positions can determine if the course will qualify for CEUs, SCHCHs or other similar hours. 51Ƶ-Dearborn does not record or track those things centrally, so if recordkeeping is desired it would be the responsibility of the program.
K-12 Activities
The platform may be used for programs involving minors. The director of the program is responsible for maintaining compliance with the . More information is available on the .
Grant-funded courses
If the platform is used for grand-funded purposes, the grant may be charged an administrative fee to cover system and personnel costs at the discretion of the Office of the Provost.
